In Loving Memory

Barbara Markle visited the Little Blue House to participate in art conversations and share her work. This photo is from a visit in 2019.

Barbara Ann Markle
NOVEMBER 17, 1934 – APRIL 30, 2026

Barbara Ann Markle was born 11/17/1934 to Mildred Brinker Herner Kuss and Harvey Burton Kuss in Elyria, OH. She graduated from Elyria high school class of 1952. She was in band and played the clarinet. She also graduated from Bowling Green State University. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Delta Phi art honorary. She taught junior high art in Elyria and Upper Arlington. However, her greater love was for figure skating. She and Richard Markle, her husband of 64 years, were partners on and off the ice. They spent many noontime lunch hours on the OSU ice rink. They continued skating until her ovarian cancer arrived in the early 2000’s. But they were still able to continue attending National and Worlds competitions all over the US and Canada. There they viewed their favorite skaters. They also went to the art museums in each city. She and Dick were early supporters of The Northwest council on human relations, civil rights and the Freedom from Religion Foundation. They also supported the Sierra club and The Nature Conservatory. She appreciated her long-time friends she made while a teacher of art. She loved her book club, painting sessions at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. She also displayed, on occasion, her art work at the Sharon Weiss Gallery and even won once at the Ohio State Fair.
